Darren has said in his work he tries to explore different aspects of the human condition. He is fascinated by the nature of personality and individuality. He looks for and explores this in all his works - of strangers, people in disguise, clowns and even apes.
While Darren's work is characterized by drama, humour and the study of relationships, it is the affection and humanity with which he captures and presents his subjects that gives his work such a personal feel and which pulls in and engages the viewer.
His work shows a strong feeling for light and shade. Simplified surfaces and exaggerated forms as well as the intensified highlights, render masses dramatic and mysterious. Often sparse, but always deft, his use of colour is insightful and uplifting, giving his subjects a glow of individuality. These qualities, along with his bold graphic lines and directional impulses modelled with subtle nuanced gestures keeps his work fresh and alive.
